Unless your car specifically requires you to opt for premium at the pump, you’re better off filling up with regular gas. Using regular gas is safe for most engines, and can save you 20 to 40 cents per gallon at the pump, according to Edmunds. As of March 7, the national average cost per gallon of premium gasoline was $3.068, while the national average for regular was $2.526.
