The amount of money Americans spent on gifts dipped after the recession of 2008, but in 2017, Gallup reported that the average person was expecting to spend US$906 on gifts for Christmas. That number is slightly lower this year, at US$885 per person, but that’s still in the range of those pre-recession years.
